The Gibbes Museum of Art exists to link the art of our past with the art of our future through innovative exhibitions, acquisitions, interpretation and educational programs that preserve and promote the art of Charleston and the American South.

Throughout the year, the museum presents a range of events including art classes for children and adults; concert and lecture series; exhibition openings; and fabulous gala events.

Habanero Rhythm :: February 8, 2013 : Society 1858 celebrated the exhibition "Vibrant Vision: The Collection of Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman" at their winter party. Guests were treated to performances by the Garage Cuban Band, Leah Suárez & Friends, and the Wona Womalan African drum & dance troupe. Charleston's leading artists transformed the human body to canvas, inspired by modern masterpieces from the exhibition on view. Bitters and Twisted in the Salon d'Orleans::July 29, 2011 : Society 1858 hosted a sultry summer party in the Gibbes Courtyard, complementing the exhibition "In Search of Julien Hudson: Free Artist of Color in Pre-Civil War New Orleans." Hors d'ouvres and cocktails provided by Maverick Southern Kitchens and beer provided by Palmetto Brewing Co. Guests were entertained with a mysterious spectacle by Theatre Marvelosa.
